Ban Houayxay, Laos

Located at the northernmost border of Laos and Thailand, Ban Houayxay is the administrative centre of Houayxay district, Bokeo province. The town lies on the Mekong River opposite Chiang Khong in Thailand. The Fourth Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge at Ban Houayxay, which opened in December 2013 to replace ferry service across the river, is now the northernmost road border crossing between the two countries.
There are several overnight riverboat itineraries passing through Ban Houayxay to reach upstream attractions in Thailand. For those choosing tour routes on the reverse direction, boats (including speed and slow boats, or bigger luxury cruises for tourists) will run down the Mekong River to reach Pakbeng, Luang Prabang and other destinations in downstream.
